Elements that build the identity of a country Chapter Five: Conclusion and Recommendations Conclusion The objective of this paper was to explore the different elements of a country’s identity that builds a country’s image. Each country has unique elements which builds its image. It is seen that the elements that builds the identity of a country plays an important role in framing the general image of the destination. With regards to Kotler’s categories of country images, it was found that Mauritius fits in the category of positive image which is countries granted with natural resources, diverse culture and gastronomy, political stability that makes up its beauty. As such surrounded by the sea, Mauritius has been gifted with inheritance beauty with its wide range of breath-taking natural scenery that makes it in a position to offer a variety of inland and sea activities to cater for the needs of the market. Additionally it was found that the multi ethnic diversity that lives in peace and harmony and sharing their culture is something unique to the image of Mauritius. It also enjoys a sound political environment Image has an important role for so as to differentiate a destination in this highly com petitive market (Yilmaz et al., 2009). The figure below has been formulated by the current author. It shows the relation between country identity and country image. It depicts the unique elements that build the image of Mauritius under the country main factors section. Those main factors establish the promotion strategy of Mauritius. Notably, challenges to the image of Mauritius is the proliferation of crime activities, prostitution, drug dealing. However, it is argued that irrespective of the prevailing image, tourists keep arriving in Mauritius. By far campaigns aiming to prove that Mauritius is still a safe place to be and that such case is an exception and any country can be victim of has been successful. Moreover, country representatives established in our key markets have been doing a great job in re building the image of Mauritius by focussing on its key strengths. Moreover, this study has also found that in light of the global crisis; priorities of people have changed making long haul travel less preferred leading to a decrease in arrival from our major markets. As such to offset the arrivals from Europe, new markets (Asian countries mainly) have been sought. However, even if it di versifies into new markets, Mauritius must continue to be visible in the European countries. It has been found that the geographical factors of a destination is somewhat an imaginary influences that place marketers should deal in proposing travelers with other valuable offers that will compensate the detriments that cannot be altered. Actually, a destination cannot be re-located from its actual geographical location. Nevertheless, promoters need to offer exciting packages that will make travelers feel distance is not a big deal. For example, despite of the infinity distance and exorbitant fees, nowadays people are committed to travel to space to experience amazing features. Hence, promoters need to propose products or services that are not accessible at competitor’s destinations. In the context of Mauritius, it can be concluded that indeed it possesses unique characteristics that enable it to cater for diverse markets. In this study it has The image of Mauritius is a significant factor on tourists’ decision-making. In the past, the image of Mauritius was entirely focuses around the honeymoons segment. The MTPA has since implemented strategies and campaigns to broaden this image to include many segments which are still unknown by most tourists: family, sports, shopping. This image, which varies from market to market, is stressed upon during fairs, workshops, events, and marketing campaigns to convince potential tourists that the destination meets the requirements they expect from a holiday destination. As Mauritius has a multi-faceted image, its tourism industry can be promoted in different effective ways even in a single market. With regards to promotional activities, it can be stated that the MTPA along with major stakeholders that makes up our tourism sector possess good understanding on promotion practices. In cases where the image of Mauritius was at stake, they have used the right promotional tool (advertising, personal selling, sales promotion) to show that Mauritius is a safe place. Moreover our strategic offices in key markets have been constantly supplying the right information on Mauritius. The main purpose of a brand is to communicate what the destination has to offer that is different and unique. The brand Mauritius is being developed using its unique USP and campaign has proved to be successful. MTPA has been developing and designing the brand of Mauritius with the right strategy so as to effectively communicate its brand promise and brand essence across the world. The major findings of this study can be summarised as follows: The image of Mauritius has been developed largely from its natural elements; history, culture, geographical factors, its people. Such elements can neither be manipulated nor altered easily. However things such regulations to enter the country, information sources (media) can be managed and should be used to improve the image of Mauritius. The research findings have concluded that policies and regulations to enter Mauritius are quite simple. Thus it does not discourage travellers to come to Mauritius. Irrespective of the established assumptions, promotion strategies should inevitably reflect the real situation of the destination and not paint abstract pictures to meet false expectations of tourists. The image of a destination significantly influences consumer’s evaluation. Therefore, the prevailing image decides the actual promotion strategy that will suit the target market. For tourism promotion to be effective, it should be supplemented by trade and investments projects. Those projects shall contribute in paving way for a favourable environment mainly by enhancing the current infrastructures and also introducing recent amenities which are essential in today’s tourism. . In the attempt to create a positive image for Mauritius, the MTPA along with other bodies that builds the tourism sector has made considerable efforts that have succeeded in re building its image in light of major crisis and attracting as much travellers. Recommendations: From the study and analysis, several spots have been identified where improvements could be brought in order to enhance the image of Mauritius and hence maximize tourist’s arrivals. The recommendations are dedicated to the future perspectives of the tourism industry. Government needs to invest in building the event and conference sector We have the basics to start events and conference business in Mauritius: few venues, event companies, and good logistics. However, Mauritius is note widely reputed to be a destination of events and conferences. Infrastructures to support events and conferences are inadequate. Instead of developing huge shopping complexes like bagatelle mall of Mauritius, Cascavelle, Mont Choisy, the government needs to encourage investors to use these plots of land to build venues like the SVICC. In other countries the conference centers are much bigger than the SVICC, they offer accommodation as well. As soon as the existing infrastructures (enlargement of road network, proper lighting and sewage facilities) are in place, the demand for events will automatically arise. Moreover, our unique blend of cultures should be promoted more massively. Incorporate cultural tourism in our core tourism product. Regulate developments As the tourism industry continues to prove successful, people recognize the advantage of investing in the sector. As a result hotel, tourist residences, guest house, restaurants are growing like mushrooms. Identify areas that are already saturated. For example ile aux cerf, there is already enough pleasure crafts operators there. Therefore, no more permits should be given to those saturated spots. A decrease in building permits is an action that needs to be considered by the government because nowadays less and less green spaces are available for tourists who prefer to travel to a destination far away from their stressful lives of buildings and pollution. Rebuilding of the MTPA website The main body aiming at promoting tourism is the MTPA. Since we have tourists from across the world who shows interest in Mauritius. It is worthwhile to consider in re building the MTPA website in different languages. This will ease access to information for everyone. Moreover an online system should be set up whereby any queries posted should be replied back in less than three hours. This will show our professionalism and dedication to be the best. Moreover the MTPA website should be a one stop shop providing information on all aspects of Mauritius (hotels and any other tourist accommodations, nightlife, climate, flight information, etc). Celebrity Marketing To increase tourist arrivals in order to reach its target of 2 million tourist’s celebrity marketing could be used. Certainly it will cost much to employ those celebrities but the returns on such an investment will be much higher. Those celebrities could be from Bollywood, Hollywood, and the world of sports. Those people will be regarded as trend setters for the higher segments and they position Mauritius as an aspirational / desirable holiday destination. Launching of a travel newspaper A travel newspaper/magazine providing the calendar of activities for the year should be published at least two times during a year. The magazine should be designed using our unique elements to show our uniqueness and it should be distributed to our strategic offices in our target markets. Those people working in our strategic offices should be encouraged to distribute those magazines to travel intermediaries across the world. In this way potential travelers will have a visual description of Mauritius and what they might be losing if they decide not to come to Mauritius. Branding Mauritius Branding plays an important role, as with all tourism destinations, as it is crucial to present a brand that will attract people. All campaigns, whether simply marketing campaigns or online/offline sales campaigns, need to include branding elements to attract potential tourists. The brand identity helps to establish a relationship between the destination and the customer, and can help to convince the latter to choose the destination. Without this element of branding, it would otherwise be hard to convince potential tourists to choose Mauritius over competing destinations.

Casey Anthony Essay

Courtroom trials are very interesting to me and I really enjoyed clerking for judges and being able to watch everything from beginning to end. The case I have chosen is a jury trial and that jury ends up being seven women and five men. The criminal laws that were violated were many starting with Child Neglect, making false official statements and obstructing an investigation. Forging checks, fraudulent use of identification and petty theft, first degree murder, aggravated child abuse aggravated manslaughter and four counts of lying to law enforcement. Heading the prosecution was the District Attorney of Orange County Florida with several of the Assistant District Attorney’s. The defense has Jose Baez and what they were calling a ‘team’ of defense counsel, which actually ended up only being 3. Judge Belvin Perry was on the bench and all of the witnesses that were on both the states list of witnesses to call but the defense as well. The outcome of this trial rocked the nation as the verdict was read live which were Not Guilty of Aggravated Murder, Aggravated Child Abuse and Aggravated Manslaughter. The defendant was found guilty on 4 counts of the forgery of checks and was credited for time served, then released from jail. Casey Anthony made national news for several days and remained the top story. She had been charged and arrested with murdering her two year old daughter, Caylee Anthony. Casey denied ever knowing anything to the police of her whereabouts and told law enforcement that her nanny had taken Caylee by force and she had been looking for her in different avenues, to supposedly protect the child. Also stating she should have contacted police sooner than 31 days prior, but she was in fear for her daughter’s life was the story she stuck to. After being jailed and held without bond pictures of the young mother were posted all over â€Å"My Space† portraying Casey Anthony as nothing but a party girl. It wasn’t until the actual trial started and the story took a huge flip and George Anthony who is Casey’s father and grandfather of little Caylee, was being accused of sexually molesting his daughter since she was 8 years old and covering up the truth about the whereabouts of the two year old. Since Casey had been a child, she had been taught to cover up and lie about certain situations if it was going to cause embarrassment to the family. It was George who had found the lifeless body of Caylee Anthony, lying face down in their pool and the cover-up began. George Anthony did not want it to get out that the family was irresponsible and left the ladder out to get into the pool. Which the story reads, little Caylee climbed up that ladder and got in the pool herself, due to no supervision and drowned. Skeletal remains of a small child were found 3 months later within a mile of the Anthony home. The body had been discarded like a piece of trash, and her remains had been duct taped in a black garbage bag and tossed into the woods. It became media frenzy and, Orlando, Florida became the busiest it had ever been since the child had gone missing. It was in fact the remains of Caylee Anthony and to this day, the young mother sticks to her story and accuses her own father of covering the death of her child up and forced Casey to go along with it. She had been taught to obey her father and did not want to go against his strictness and allowed George Anthony to dispose of the body. The trial that began on May 24, 2011 went to the jury on July 3rd 2011. Deliberations were suspended over the 4th of July holiday and resumed July 5th. During its deliberations, the jurors did not ask to review any of the 400 exhibits, request any clarifications of the law or ask for any of the trial testimony to be read back. After deliberating for 10 hours and 40 minutes, the foreperson informed the court that the jury had reached a unanimous verdict that afternoon. More often than not when a jury returns a verdict that quickly and without asking for any type of assistance from the court, it bodes ill for the defendant. This jury, however, was about to prove the old maxim that juries are unpredictable despite what all the talking heads predicted it would conclude. The jury found her not guilty of murder, aggravated child abuse and manslaughter. She was however, convicted of four counts of lying to police officers. Judge Perry sentenced Casey to one year in jail and $1,000. 00 in fines for each of the providing false information counts. She was released from jail on July 17, 2011due to time already served. While Casey had been acquitted in her daughter’s death, Casey’s problems were not at an end. The defamation suit of Zenaida Gonzalez who Casey accused of kidnapping her daughter (one of the false statements) is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages. Gonzalez states she lost her job as a result of Casey’s allegations which led to the loss of her apartment by eviction and she and her 6 children continue to be harassed and threatened. (Kumar) It has changed how society works today by taking more â€Å"child missing stories† more serious and not to the facts of the case, but the simple fact that the 12 person jury could not convict her due to lack of evidence. The State of Florida had not proved their case and she was walking free except with a few misdemeanor charges of lying to law enforcement. How could this have happened, with all the circumstantial evidence of her guilt was obvious, the jury stood by the law? The evidence did not prove that Casey had been involved at all without finding any DNA or any other minute evidence. At almost the end of the trial, Casey asked to be evaluated by Psychologist and Psychiatrist to see if she was mentally capable to continue with the trial. She was found competent and the trial continued til the end finding her not guilty. All of America disagreed with the verdict except the defendant and the defense counsel and still held her responsible for her daughter’s death. Society even went to the extreme as to calling the jury â€Å"idiots† I believe Casey Anthony led a not so great life, but was also a spoiled brat who always got her way. So with the news that she was walking free didn’t surprise me, as I couldn’t see any physical evidence either. Sad but true, she is out living her life without her daughter and it does not seem to bother her a bit. Casey is in hiding though as of today and knows there are people out there who hate her. She has started to learn and recognize her lies and what they did to people, and has told friends she has a lot of regards. Other sources say she plans to receive psychological counseling. She is young and optimistic and realizes she can’t change the past but she can move forward.

Depending on where and when you were brought up, your idea of Cinderella may be the Disney movie, the fairy tale in Grimms Fairy Tales, the classic fairy tale by Charles Perrault, upon which the Disney movie is based, or one of the other versions of Cinderella. To further confuse matters, calling a story a Cinderella story does not mean that the heroine is named Cinderella. While the names Ashpet, Tattercoats, and Catskins may be somewhat familiar to you, there seem to be as many different names for the main protagonist as there are different versions of the story. Elements of a Cinderella Story What exactly makes a story a Cinderella story? While there seem to be several interpretations of this, there also seems to be general agreement that you will usually find certain elements in a Cinderella story. The main character is generally, but not always, a girl who is badly treated by her family. Cinderella is a good and kind person, and her goodness is rewarded with magical assistance. She is recognized for her worth by something she has left behind (for example, a golden slipper). She is elevated in position by a royal person, who loves her for her good qualities. Story Variations As early as the late nineteenth century, variations of the story were being collected for publication. In 1891 The Folk-Lore Society in London published Marian Roalfe Coxs Cinderella: Three Hundred and Forty-Five Variants of Cinderella, Catskin, and Cap 0 Rushes, Abstracted and Tabulated, with a Discussion of Medieval Analogues and Notes. Professor Russell Pecks online Cinderella Bibliography will give you an idea of just how very many versions there are. The bibliography, which includes summaries for many of the stories, includes basic European texts, modern childrens editions and adaptations, including versions of the Cinderella story from around the world, as well as a great deal of other information. A group of hogs can root and destroy several acres of crops or land in a single night. Wild hogs were first introduced to America by the Spanish as a domestic animal used for meat. Over time these animals escaped and began free ranging and breeding. They quickly became wild. In the 1930s owners of ranches introduced Russian boars to be shot in game preserves. These Russian boars grow much larger, are more aggressive and have larger, sharper teeth. When they escaped, cross breeding occurred that introduced the genes that gave America the hybrid feral swine they have today. No university accepted definition of basic needs exists because poverty is a relative concept. A key issue in the area of poverty is inequality. Inequality has been a problem in all societies. No society distributes income evenly. Despite all the conceptual and technical problems of measurement, the government has devised a widely cited poverty index that reflects the different consumption requirements of families depending on their size and composition, on the sex and age of the family head, and on weather they live in rural or urban areas. Based on past surveys, the designers of the poverty index determined that families of three or more person spend approximately one-third of their income on food. Thus, the poverty level for these families was, therefore, set at three times the cost of the economy food plan. For smaller families and persons living alone, the cost of the economy food plan was multiplied by higher factors in order to compensate for the larger fixed expenses of smaller households. The poverty thresholds are updated every year to reflect changes in the consume r price index but overall rises in standard of living. First, it does not allow for regional variations in the cost of living or for higher costs in the central city areas, where many of the poor are concentrated. A greater number of the working poor are employed at low-paying jobs. In 1988, 40 percent of all poor persons worked but could not overcome poverty. One-fifth of all poor families had two or more wage earner for part of the year and remained poor. (Levitan, page 114) The problems for the working poor are frequent joblessness, low wages, deficient education, and inadequate skills. The plight of the working poor can be alleviated by employment programs that streamline the operation of the labor market, increase the productivity of low-income workers, and create opportunities for employment and advancement. Legislation to eliminate discrimination must also be enforced when such employment and training progra ms are implemented. Programs provide goods and services directly to the needy to supplement their income. Whatever the means of helping the poor with cash or in-kind income, public attention must usually be focused on a specific problems in order to receive political attention. The necessary goods and services sometimes are not available on the market, and direct provision is a more effective way of providing essential aid. Low-costing housing, for example, desperately needed to combat homelessness, is not profitable to construct and will not be provided by the private sector of the economy without direct government action. Granting housing to the poor in the absence an increase in an affordable housing supply might raise rents on existing units, as it did during the 1980s. In a few cases the government may be able to provide goods and services more efficiently than the private sector because of the savings that are inherent in such large-scale transactions.
